As the only home-based ECE provider in New Zealand with an education and training arm that operates as a Category 1* registered Private Training Establishment, PORSE is well placed to meet the new Government requirement around minimum qualifications, announced this morning.
We are in complete agreement with Minister Hipkins’ announcement that states “qualifications are linked to positive outcomes for children and research suggests that qualifications support educators to provide children with stimulating, warm and supportive interactions” and we share the government’s goal of quality outcomes for children.
PORSE already offers the NZQA New Zealand Certificate in Early Childhood Education and Care Level 4 qualification, and more than 50 percent of PORSE educators are already trained at a minimum Level 3 qualification. This demonstrates the value and investment we place in learning for the good of the industry, and ultimately of New Zealand children.
While PORSE covers the enrolment fees for its educators to complete their Level 4 qualification, the qualification is available to all in the ECE sector. We offer online learning programmes, which are suited to anyone who works in a childcare centre or an in-home setting and who is untrained, enabling them to complete the Level 4 qualification while still working.
We will continue to monitor and communicate with the government on rolling out of this change, including the transition period for the qualification to become mandatory.
As the largest in-home ECE provider, PORSE is encouraged by the collaborative approach the government has taken with industry leaders during the review process. We will continue to take a leadership role and work closely with the Ministry as it rolls out its new policies.
*Category 1 is Highly Confident for educational performance and a Highly Confident self-assessment capability.
