PORSE Education & Training is a Category One accredited, private training establishment with a strong focus on Early Childhood Education (ECE) and Care.

Our team will discuss with you, your needs and requirements and help you to decide what option is best suited to your family.

Whether you choose an in-home educator, nanny or au pair, your child will benefit from low-ratio care in a safe, nurturing home environment.

The New Zealand government provides 20 Hours of ECE (Early Childhood Education) to give young children the best possible start in life. This subsidy is vitally important because a quality early childhood education, such as the PORSE programme, builds lifelong foundations for successful learning.

We’ll answer any questions you may have about choosing your Educator or Nanny and take your details so that we can begin the search for the right Educator for your family, taking into account any special needs or requirements your child may have. The process will vary slightly, depending on how quickly you require care for your child.

We will work with you to liaise initial meetings with available Educators. We understand that every family has unique needs and requirements, so will always endeavour to offer you several options to ensure you are able to find the person who is the best fit for you.

Once you have decided on your perfect Educator, we’ll liaise again with you and undertake the enrolment process. This is an easy process that ensures we have all the required information prior to your child starting care.

Home-based educators

Home-based childcare is a philosophy built on the way nature intended us to parent. Science has proven that children need attached, safe relationships and environments during their first 1,000 days, in order to develop positive social skills and resilience.
Home-based childcare is emulating this through authentic relationships, environments and experiences.

No. Our activities, programmes and flexibility around how you structure your day means that you and the children in your care can get out and about as much, or as little, as you like. Many of our PORSE parents have commented on their children knowing how to behave in public, thanks to the experiences they have had while with their PORSE Educator or Nanny

You do not need a qualification to register with us, however, you need to be willing to complete the New Zealand Certificate in Early Childhood Education & Care (Level 4), which is available free to all PORSE Educators and nannies and can be completed while working with PORSE. You will be well supported in your role by a trained teacher, who will visit at least once per month, and is also available via phone and email if you have any questions or need guidance.

We also offer ongoing professional development webinars and workshops with For Life Education and Training.

*Please note that to enrol in the New Zealand Certificate in Early Childhood Education & Care (Level 4), you need to be a New Zealand resident, an Australian citizen, or a permanent resident currently residing in New Zealand.

Safety and cleanliness are paramount when caring for children. PORSE fully supports you in what is required to make your home safe.

We work with you to meet PORSE health and safety standards, based on the requirements for home-based ECE services provided by the Ministry of Education. As a quick reference: your property must be fully fenced, any pools, spas, lakes, and streams must be fully fenced, any heating source such as a fireplace or heater must be guarded. If you drive a car, it must be registered, and hold a current warrant of fitness and have appropriate child car seat anchor bolts. All pets must have a safe place away from the children and homes with stairs, decks, and terraced gardens must be made safe for children (methods of ensuring safety will vary based on the nature of the environment, such as access to, and heights of structures. We will work through this with you).

Childcare

The PORSE programme stems from our name – P, O, R, S and E – Play, Observe, Record, Support, Evaluate & Extend. These core principles, in conjunction with the New Zealand early childhood education curriculum Te Whāriki, guide the delivery of learning and play activities to support your child’s development, both in the home and through PORSE PlaySchools, events and outings.

Each Community Team provides a different schedule of activities. These are regularly planned, and use the local community as a base to extend children’s learning experiences. You will be required to sign a form giving your permission to attend ‘regular’ events such as weekly PlaySchool sessions, and again for any ‘special’ excursions, prior to the outing taking place. You will be informed of these through flyers or emails, and we always welcome family and extended family to attend anytime (including days where your child is not enrolled in care).

Preparing for school is an important part of ECE. We will walk alongside you on this journey. With the support of your Programme Tutor, your Educator will tailor a programme to support your child as they begin to transition to school. You can discuss any specific aspirations for your child directly with your Educator, or by contacting your Programme Tutor.

Your PORSE Programme Tutor, a qualified and registered ECE teacher, is in frequent contact with your Educator to provide support, advice, and expertise in the care and education of your child/ren. All Educators are encouraged to complete the PORSE Certification Pathway as well as ongoing professional development.

We will work with you to ensure you have everything you need and support your move from centre-based or another home-based teaching, you’ll also be able to maintain your Practising Certificate with our Teachers in Homes Programme.

We’ll give you the freedom to get back to why you first began – to make a difference!

You will have a dedicated community team to support you getting started and through your journey with PORSE.

Through our ongoing work with the Education Council of Aotearoa New Zealand, as a fully registered ECE teacher, you are also now able to maintain your practising certificate (with a subject to confirmation status) while working as a PORSE home-based Educator and we will pay the cost of your practising certificate.

Most importantly, as a PORSE home Educator, you’ll experience the joy of working with children in small numbers. You’ll have the time to enjoy the wonder of a child learning something new that you have taught because you’ve provided them with the environment and relationship that allows them to feel safe and secure.

Whether you choose to be an educator, a nanny, or an au pair, you will be fully supported to deliver the PORSE programme within the national ECE curriculum, Te Whāriki, with monthly visits from a trained early childhood teacher, and have access to free professional development with PORSE Education and Training.
